Bedding Care 101

Taking good care of your mattress over time will help you get the most benefit from it for years to come. Here are some helpful mattress care tips that are also easy to follow.

Ensure proper support

A new mattress needs the support of a proper foundation to resist sagging over time. You can choose from the matching box spring, an adjustable foundation (if the mattress is compatible) or a bed frame that has the proper number of slats (check the mattress warranty for details).

Use a liquid resistant mattress protector

Spills and stains can impact the integrity of the mattress fabric and foams. Severe spills can also cause the foams to collapse, making them prone to impressions which can cause discomfort. A liquid resistant mattress protector will help keep your mattress clean and healthy over time. Look for one made from breathable materials.

Clean your mattress regularly

Knowing how to clean a mattress can help you reduce dust and allergen build up. Regular vacuuming of the mattress using a handheld attachment during your regular cleaning cycles at home is an easy way to clean your mattress.

Take caution when considering how to wash the mattress in the event of accidental spills or stains. Saturating the foams and fibers with liquid cleaners and water can damage the foam. When needed, you can spot clean stains using warm water and a mild detergent. Then, let the surface dry completely before putting your sheets back on.

Rotate to even out wear over time

Rotating is not required, but it can help even out normal wear over time. You can rotate your pillow top mattress as often as once per month, or less depending on your preference.

Take care when moving your mattress

If you need to move your mattress to a new room, or a new house, be sure to measure the entryways to insure that your mattress can fit through without bending. Bending the mattress can cause damage and void the warranty. When possible, work with professional movers to insure that your mattress is transported without any damage.

Understand the mattress warranty

Most of today’s mattress warranties protect against manufacturing defects, which will be clearly listed in the warranty brochure that comes with the mattress. Not caring for your mattress over time may cause damage that impacts the comfort and support of the mattress – but damage is most often not covered by warranty.

DO’S & DON’TS OF BEDDING CARE

Do's

  • DO rotate your mattress as needed, this will promote even wear.

  • DO use an appropriate frame with center support on Queen and King size sets to ensure validation of your warranty.

  • DO let your new sleep set “air” upon removal from its plastic packaging. Discard the plastic wrapping on your mattress as soon as possible; a child or pet can become entangled and suffocate.

  • DO keep your bedding clean and use a mattress protector. Stains, soiling, fluid penetration or other signs of abuse may invalidate the warranty and make your bedding ineligible for repair or replacement.

  • DO replace the foundation when purchasing a new mattress to provide the proper support for your new mattress.

  • DO carry your mattress upright on its side. It is easier to handle and less likely to damage the mattress. If you need to store your mattress for an extended period of time, store it flat.

  • DO promptly dispose of old mattresses to avoid a  fire hazard.

Don'ts

  • DON’T remove the law tag at the end of your mattress as this has the identification needed to establish your warranty rights.

  • DON’T bend excessively or jump on your mattress under any circumstances. Such treatment may damage the mattress or box-spring. Normal use on an adjustable base is permitted with an adjustable approved mattress.

  • DON’T use cleaning fluids on your mattress. The chemicals may damage some of the materials.

  • DON’T allow your mattress to get wet. Any liquids, water or other fluids may damage upholstery causing materials to compress. Kwaality recommends that you protect your mattress from water and other liquids with a water proof mattress pad.

  • DON’T lift your mattress by the handles (if included). Handles are designed to position the mattress only.
